BBC Natural History Unit The BBC’s website holds a comprehensive range of information about species and habitats, as well as providing information on wildlife television programmes.


British Trust for Ornithology The British Trust for Ornithology is a not-for-profit trust established to research wild birds in the UK. They investigate populations, movements and ecology of birds. They operate a volunteer survey programme and use their knowledge to promote and encourage an appreciation of birds.


Butterfly Conservation The alarming decline of many beautiful butterflies after the last war led a small group of dedicated naturalists, headed by Sir Peter Scott, to form Butterfly Conservation in 1968 as the British Butterfly Conservation Society. The aim of the new Society was to try to halt the decline of these lovely insects and at the same time help safeguard the environment itself. Specifically they aimed to conserve both butterflies and moths, as well as the habitats on which they depend.

Mammals Trust UK The Mammals Trust UK undertakes conservation work for mammals in the UK.


National Urban Forestry Unit This site provides information about the UK's National Urban Forestry Unit and its work. It also provides an online forum for the discussion about the many issues surrounding trees and woods in towns together with links to other sites of interest, including urban and community forestry projects throughout the UK.


Plantlife Plantlife is the only national membership charity dedicated exclusively to conserving all forms of plant life in its natural habitat. They are unique in the UK, in Europe and possibly the world. Plantlife acts directly to stop common wild plants becoming rare in the wild, to rescue wild plants on the brink of extinction, and to protect sites of exceptional botanical importance. The charity carries out practical conservation work, influences relevant policy and legislation, and collaborates widely to promote the cause of wild plant conservation.


RSPB The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is a membership-based organisation whose focus is the conservation of birds. Conservation work is undertaken through the creation and management of nature reserves to help birds and other wildlife. Their role includes debating with and advising Government and other major influencers on a range of issues that affect us all. The Society also works with other organisations when it sees activities are breaking the law or causing harm to the environment.

Association of Heritage Interpretation AHI is the key UK forum for anyone interested in interpretation: the art of helping people explore and appreciate our world. The Association was founded in 1975 as the Society for the Interpretation of Britain's Heritage.


Council for British Archaeology The CBA is the principal UK-wide non-governmental organisation that promotes knowledge, appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.


GreenSpace GreenSpace is a not-for-profit organisation set up to help those committed to the planning, design, management and use of public parks and open spaces.

Heritage Lottery Fund The Heritage Lottery Fund enables all of us to celebrate, look after and learn more about our diverse heritage.


Royal Parks The Royal Parks manages Londons 8 Royal Park spaces and (almost!) everything in them. They also conserve the Parks to ensure future generations can enjoy them too.


The Ancient Monument Society The Ancient Monuments Society was founded in 1924 for the study and conservation of ancient monuments, historic buildings and fine old craftsmanship. We are recognised as one of the National Amenity Societies, and as such are informed of any application for listed building consent in England and Wales involving demolition.


The Architectural Heritage Fund The Architectural Heritage Fund helps to repair and regenerate historic buildings. We do this by helping voluntary and community groups, with grants, low-interest loans, and advice. We have been involved in many hundreds of projects of all kinds throughout the United Kingdom.

The Garden History Society Garden History is now firmly established as a valid academic subject; but the society has never lost that sense of freshness and discovery with which it was founded 30 years ago, when garden historians were few, but linked in friendship by shared pleasure in their subject. The National Trust The National Trust was founded in 1895 and they now care for over 248,000 hectares (612,000 acres) of beautiful countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings and gardens of outstanding interest and importance. The National Trust are a registered charity and completely independent of Government, therefore relying heavily on the generosity of our subscribing members (now numbering over 2.7 million) and other supporters.


UK Database of Historic Parks and Gardens The database has been prepared by Landscapes & Gardens at the University of York, and has been enabled by grants from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. It contains outline information on places, their locations by local authority, persons associated and contact names and addresses of those bodies that may have further information. Association of Professional Landscape Designers The goals of the APLD™ are to advance landscape design as an independent profession and to promote the recognition of landscape designers as highly qualified, dedicated professionals.


CABE The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) are improving people's lives through better buildings, spaces and places. CABE is the champion for architecture in England. Their function is to promote high standards in the design of buildings and the spaces between them. CABE help and offer advice to all those who create, manage and use the built environment.


Landscape and Arts Network Established in 1993, the Network created a vital new platform for constructive dialogue between previously disparate disciplines, to encourage new ideas and projects involving the urban and rural environments.


Landscape Design Trust The Landscape Design Trust is an educational charitable trust whose aim is to stimulate concern for, and understanding of the landscape — especially the quality of the landscape around us and the way landscape is designed, used, managed and protected. The Trust is a registered charity in the United Kingdom.


Landscape Institute The Landscape Institutes main object is to regulate the way its members operate through its mandatory code of professional conduct.


Landscape Research Group Landscape Research Group was founded in 1967 to foster co-operation and interdisciplinary exchange between people with an interest in landscape.

Since then, as landscape issues and the need for research has become more pressing, the role of LRG has become more important. The Group has extended both the areas of concern and the readership of its journals. LRG is a non-profit organisation and is a registered Charity and Limited Company.


Society of Garden Designers At a time when there are many people offering garden design and landscape design services, the Society of Garden Designers aims to provide the public, both in the UK and abroad, with the assurance of competence, quality, experience, and in the work of many members, outstanding artistic flair. Before being accepted as a full member, each candidate must have received training and at least three years practical experience. They must then present their own projects for approval by the Society's adjudicators to demonstrate their competence in design, construction, specification writing, planting plans and site inspection.

Funding
Action Earth Action Earth is a campaign co-ordinated by CSV Environment and sponsored by the Environment Agency in England and Wales. The campaign enables people to take part in practical conservation projects and empowers them to improve quality of life for themselves, their communities and future generations. All the grants available for Action Earth 2005 have already been taken up. Adult & Community Learning Fund Available to fund innovatibve approaches to re-engage adult groups working on projects concerning childcare and the environment


Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund The aim of the ALSF is to address the environmental and social costs of aggregate extraction. English Nature and The Countryside Agency have developed the ALSF Partnership Grant Scheme. They will jointly administer an allocation of around £5.7 million in 2005/2006 and £4 million in 2006/2007, to fund Land and Community-based work. Expressions of interest and applications are now being accepted.

Awards For All Awards for All is a Lottery grants scheme aimed at local communities. Grants of between £500 and £5,000 are availible. Funding projects that enable people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, as well as projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community.


Barclays New Futures & Barclays Community Investment Program The overriding objective of the Barclays Community Programme is to achieve real and lasting mutual benefit to both the community and to Barclays. They aim to build succesful partnerships with local communities and charitable groups, which produce lasting and tangible benefits


Big Lottery Fund Big Lottery Fund is a new organisation that will hand out half the money for good causes from the National Lottery. The New Opportunities Fund and the Community Fund now work together to create a single new lottery distributor – the Big Lottery Fund.


BOC Foundation for the Environment Programme Grants are available to UK businesses who may have a project that tackles certain aspects of environmental degradation and pollution. Most grants are between £20,000 and £100,000 but there are no fixed limits and schemes can be considered which fall outside these guidelines. Bridge House Trust The Bridge House Trust makes grants in excess of £16 million a year to charitable projects benefiting the inhabitants of Greater London.


Calouste Gulbeackian Foundation Grants strongly focused on capacity building in local groups and neighbourhoods and exploring newforms of area management and service delivery. In particular for community groups, in both urban and rural settings, which are developing new strategies for regeneration.


Charity Bank The Charity Bank offers loans and mortgage loans exclusively to enterprises working for charitable purposes including registered or exempt charities and also community associations, voluntary organisations, community businesses, social enterprises, social landlords as well as to for-profit companies if the loan is for a purely charitable purpose.


Company Giving .Org The Directory of Social Change's Company Giving website. A database of company support available to voluntary and community organisations. This database contains all those companies in The Guide to UK Company Giving (John Smyth, DSC, 2005), as well as newly discovered large givers. Over 500 companies are featured , giving over £290 million in cash donations and more in other forms of community support.


Consortium on Opportunities for Volunteering The aim of the scheme is to involve volunteers, with a special emphasis on unemployed people, in voluntary projects working in the fields of health and social services. Culture 2000 Culture 2000 is the European Union's funding programme specifically aimed at arts and culture. Eligible projects: Can be focused on either: performing arts, visual arts, cultural heritage or books/reading (mainly translation) [] Must have something uniquely European about them (i.e. not just a tour of a UK performance or exhibition)[] Must be developed and implemented by at least 3 partner organisations from 3 different European countries []Must last either for 1 year or, in exceptional cases, for 2-3 years []Will have a total budget of between € 100-300,000 (1 year projects) or € 500,000 per year (2-3 year projects) []Can receive, from Culture 2000, a maximum of 50% (1 year projects) or 60% (2-3 year projects) of the budget Will not include expenditure on buildings or buying new equipment - Culture 2000 can only fund projects


English Heritage English Heritage has a number of grant schemes designed to help with the protection and promotion of the Historic Environment.


English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS) Six grants will be available under the scheme. To support the creation of properly designed and well located new woodlands, the gathering of specific information to improve management decisions, to create and sustain an increase in the quantity and quality of woodlands, to support the preparation of plans that meet UKWAS, to support desirable changes in the delivery of public benefits from woodland at the time of greatest opportunity & to support the basic management activities that underpin woodland sustainability


Environmental Stewardship Environmental Stewardship is a new agri-environment scheme which provides funding to farmers and other land managers in England who deliver effective environmental management on their land. The scheme is intended to build on the recognised success of the Environmental Sensitive Areas scheme and the countryside Stewardship Scheme. Its primary objectives are to: Conserve wildlife (biodiversity) Maintain and enhance landscape quality and character Protect the historic environment and natural resources Promote public access and understanding of the countryside Natural resource protection Within the primary objectives it also has the secondary objectives of Genetic Conservation Flood Management


European Regional Development fund The European Regional Development Fund was set up 1975 to stimulate economic development in the least prosperous regions of the European Union (EU).As EU membership has grown, the ERDF has developed into a major instrument for helping to redress regional imbalances. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister manages the ERDF in England.


Funds For Historic Buildings (FFHB) This website is a comprehensive guide to funding for anyone seeking to repair, restore or convert for a new use any historic building. It allows you to search for a specific funding source, or for sources which are relevant to your project. It also gives useful advice on how to maximise your chances of success when making funding applications.


Government Funding. Org This site is your online portal to grants for the voluntary and community sector from the following funders: Department for Education and Skills / Department of Health Home Office / Office of the Deputy Prime Minister / Government Offices for the Regions


Grants for Historic Buildings Monuments & Designed Landscape This scheme covers grants for the repair and conservation of some of England’s most significant historic buildings, monuments and designed landscapes. Grants are primarily offered for urgent repairs or other work required within two years to prevent loss or damage to important architectural, archaeological or landscape features.


Groundwork UK Groundwork's purpose is to build sustainable communities through joint environmental action. We aim to do this by getting residents, businesses and other local organisations involved in practical projects that improve quality of life, bring about regeneration and lay the foundations for sustainable development.


HBOS Foundation - Matched Funding Scheme The HBOS Foundation matches pound for pound money (up to a maximum of £500) raised by colleagues to boost their local charitable donation even further.


Heritage Lottery fund The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) enables communities to celebrate, look after and learn more about our diverse heritage. From our great museums and historic buildings to local parks and nature reserves to recording and celebrating traditions, customs and history, HLF grants open up our nation’s heritage for everyone to enjoy. Over the last ten years we have awarded over £3 billion to more than 15,000 projects across the UK.


Interreg III Interreg III provides financial assistance to support cross-border, transnational and interregional co-operation projects. Special emphasis has been placed on integrating remote regions and those which share external borders with the candidate countries. The programme is financed under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is broken down into three strands:


Jenny Wood Environmental Trust The Jenny Wood Environmental Trust gives grants for small community and local projects that make good use of volunteers. The Trust supports conservation of fine buildings, landscapes, gardens, wilderness, and training for conservation. Grants of £5000 - £30 000 are usually released over three years, however some small grants of up to £1000 are made more regularly. Applications from registered charities only to: Jenny Wood Environmental Trust, 36 Oak Village, London NW5


Local Heritage Initiative The Local Heritage Initiative gives communities funds, advice and support to bring their local heritage alive.


Onyx Environmental Trust The Trust was set up in 1997 under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and awards monies derived from landfill tax to support a wide range of environmentally focused projects throughout the UK. Funding is avlaible for Projects that involve reclaiming land, the use of which has been prevented by some previous activity. Projects that provide or maintain public amenities or parks within 10 miles of a licensed landfill site.


RABBIT First year financial assistance is available to small businesses, charities and community groups who are accepted to trial alternative methods of broadband Internet access in remote areas. Those accepted onto the trial will receive financial assistance for the first year of £700 or the fees for the first 12 months - whichever is lower.


The Chestnut Fund - grants for conservation The Chestnut Fund is an independent charity, making grants available to encourage and enable community groups to carry out conservation activities. Start up Grants up to £100 and Support Grants up to £300


The Igloo Urban Regeneration Partnership Igloo invests to create environmentally sustainable, mixed use, well designed, urban neighbourhoods, in regeneration areas on the edge of the UK's top 20 city centres. The Partnership has strong Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) characteristics.


Tudor Trust The Tudor Trust is 50 in March 2005: During our Golden Jubilee year the Trustees have decided to focus our grant making on organisations which have received a grant from us in the previous five years.


Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN) Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN) is a non-profit making, registered Environmental Body that distributes grants to community, heritage and conservation projects under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

Children's Play Council The NCB also operate the Children’s Play Council (CPC) whose aim is to raise awareness of the importance of play, and the need for all children to have access to better play opportunities and services.

Inclusive Fitness Initiative The Inclusive Fitness Initiative is a Sport England Lottery Funded Project. The project supports facilities through four key elements, equipment, training, marketing and sports development.


Park It ! Park It! is a series of events taking place regionally in parks throughout the UK. Held over three years, this project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and organised by GreenSpace in partnership with local community groups and local authorities. These events will inspire communities to discover the history of their parks and celebrate their significance to the local people that use them


Register of Play Inspectors In response to the concern of a lack of an independent accredited body for children’s playground inspectors, four main organisations (ILAM, API, NPFA, RoSPA) who are concerned with playground safety have joined together to fill this gap. They developed an approved registration scheme that will enable inspectors to show potential and existing employers, that they have demonstrated competency to carry out the tasks required.

Conservation & Countryside Skills The College offers a range of programmes, which provide sound practical and theoretical aspects of conservation and countryside recreation. The College manages extensive woodlands, grasslands and pond habitats, has won Industry Awards for Conservation and undertakes a number of environmental projects and surveys within the Thames Valley. BCA is a corporate member of the Countryside Management Association (CMA).


Environmental Trainers Network If you are looking for suitable training in the subject areas of Communities, Sustainability, Social Inclusion, Fundraising, Communication, Management, Education & Play, Interpersonal skills and many more, then the (Environmental Trainers Network) training programme will be of interest to you. ETN offer a wide range of events at venues which are easily accessible by all means of transport. New locations for this year are Swindon, Exeter, Durham & Peterborough (we already use venues in Birmingham, London, Leeds, York, Manchester, Bristol, Doncaster, Worcester, Burton on Trent, Sandy)


Landscape Conservation & Change The Landscape Conservation Course has taught specialist skills in restoration and conservation of historic landscapes for over 20 years. Option includes Day release Post Graduate Diploma and any part of the coursework taken as CPD
